through the body, connect to soul

Vinyasa II

This class is taught by:

Mandy Morell

For the past year Mandy has been finding her yoga legs on the high seas aboard a Norwegian tall-ship, which was circumnavigating the globe! Daily practice and a weekly yoga club for the students gave her a new respect for standing postures and patience. Prior to this she was teaching yoga in Kathmandu Nepal, but her love of yoga began in a hot room on a cold night in Anchorage, Alaska. She took her first yoga class in 2009, but didn't really discover her love for the practice until her high school students convinced her to started a yoga club in 2010. This was her first yoga family.
She received her 200 hour training in the beautiful city of Rishikesh, India, on the holy River Ganges, and has had the gift of practicing with people from all over the world throughout her travels.
Mandy brings her high energy and her love for music into her classes, creating a dynamic rhythm to the practice. Mandy believes yoga is integral for physical and mental health, and believes in the power of yoga to rehabilitate. She hopes her students enjoy a good sweat and allow themselves to laugh out loud in each class.

Justine Schwab

RYT-200
Since Justine began her journey into teaching in 2015, every direction she turns she meets inspiration and motivation to remain on this path. She began her yoga journey 9 years ago, and after 5 years of falling in and out of her practice, she found consistency and devotion through her discovery of Self. It was the transition of shifting her experience of yoga from a purely physical practice that happened in a class, to something she carried with her in each moment. Breath, awareness, movement. Her curiosity about the workings of the mind, our relationship with ourselves and our bodies, and the transformative impact of yoga drove her to take the leap she had always feared to take, and in August of 2015 she left the country for the first time to complete a 200-hr training in Costa Rica. Through consistent teaching since, personal practice, various healing modalities through White Raven Center, and an insatiable hunger to discover more about the human experience, she has found a teaching style that combines building a relationship with the body, mind, and spirit, and challenging ourselves to settle into the comforts and discomforts of the constant ebb and flow of life. Her time spent at Deha Yoga has been central to the teacher she is today, and the opportunities and growth it has offered to her journey is irreplaceable. Her heart is truly present in all she teaches.

Joyce Mayer

RYT200
Joyce has taken the long road to teaching, through a beginning practice 35 years ago, as an exhausted college student, in a dusty church attic in Harvard Square, years of dance (as a student and performer), Pilates, and multidisciplinary spiritual practice. Her academic experience includes a degree in molecular biology, with special studies in vertebrate development and structure. She is an adjunct professor in ballet at UAA Department of Theater and Dance, instructs ballet at Pulse Dance Studio, and teaches Pilates at Alaska Dance Theater. After years of parenthood, performance, and teaching, a return to active yoga practice provided a means of grounding her kinesthetic impulses in a consciously integrated technology, that is healing, joyful, and provokes endless exploration. She received her 200 hour teacher training through Anchorage Yoga, in 2014, and hopes to extend to her classes the opportunity to gather what they seek from the experience, and to be open to the possibility of the unexpected.
A vinyasa flow practice where we explore all the usual postures (sun salutes, the warriors, backbends, hip openers) in a fluid and creative way. This is a practice where you can lose yourself in the simple rhythm of linking breath with movement. Experience with "flow" yoga is recommended as more challenging postures are taught (arm balances & inversions). Modifications are always given! 80 degrees.
